The tie rod lifts the membrane and draws water into the membrane chamber. Gravity and the tension in the membrane push the lever backwards again. The water is forced out of the membrane chamber and flows into the drinking trough. The non-return valves ensure that the water is always drawn up and pumped in the right direction. Some of the pumped water remains on the upper side of the membrane and flows into the drinking trough as soon as the membrane is reactivated during the next cycle, i.e. when the animal presses the lever again (double-stroke function).
