The piglets‘ tails are shortened to around ⅔ of their original length during the first days of life. This means that the tip of the tail becomes more innervated and the piglets will defend themselves against being bitten by other animals. The heat of the blade means that the wounds produced are sealed immediately (cauterisation) and this drastically reduces the risk of infection.
