While the classic light bulb has already disappeared from the market, other traditional lighting sources such as halogen, energy-saving and discharge lamps are more and more being replaced by more modern technologies. The European Union is taking a leading role in this: With Directive 2009/125/ EC (Ecodesign Directive), the legal framework has been created for the eco-design of energy-related products such as those used for lighting systems. Inefficient products are supposed to be gradually phased out of the market. And due to its high energy efficiency and life span, LED technology has emerged as the clear winner in this area. In 2011, the share of LED products in the global lighting system market was still at 12 %; however, according to a study by the McKinsey consulting firm, this share is now over 70 % – the triumphant advance of LED is thus rapid and unstoppable.
