8 Good to know about drinkers Evaluation of the water bowl valve types The various water bowl types are evaluated below with a description of their suitability for certain species. Open trough drinkers with float valve: Open water stations reflect natural drinking in nature. The animal can submerse their mouths and take in large quantities of water in a short time. Trough drinkers are suitable for all animal species, especially for lactating cattle who should take in a lot of water in a short time. Water bowl valve used: A float valve is mostly used here. The float, a floating hollow body, attached to a lever arm which opens or closes the valve nozzle through its lever action. If the set water level is not reached, the valve nozzle is opened and closed again once the water level has reached its ‘target’ again. This means there is always water in the water bowl. Float water bowl: Float water bowls are characterised by open water surfaces with a constant water level. They are especially suitable for young animals (e.g. calves), sheep, goats and animals with sensitive snouts or weaning aids. Water bowl valve used: A float valve is used here, just like in the trough drinker. The float valves used in float water bowls are mostly smaller and have a lower flow rate than in trough drinkers. Otherwise the function is the same. Pipe valve water bowl: Pipe valves are primarily suitable for animals that cannot press hard with the bridge of the nose and for skittish animals. Suitable for all animal species, especially for horses as well as individual watering stations. Potentially not suitable for beef cattle. Water bowl valve used: The pipe valve or nozzle can easily be actuated by the bridge of the animal’s nose without great effort. The water than runs through the ‘pipe’ at the lower end into the floor waterer. Paddle valve water bowl: This kind of water bowl is primarily suited for powerful animals (e.g. cattle) due to the larger force required to actuate the valve using the ‘paddle’. Water bowl valve used: The ‘paddle’ (pressure valve) actuates the valve behind it upon being pressed from the front. When the animal presses on the ‘paddle’, the valve behind it opens and water runs into the floor waterer. 221140 221851 225031 222070
