Daily weight gains in the experimental group were 100 g higher, corresponding to a 20 per cent increase. Furthermore, the experimental group required 36 percentage points fewer courses of antibiotic treatment than the control group (52.4% vs. 88.2% in the control group). Trial 2: Research question: Is Globigen® Dia Stop suitable as a treatment for diarrhoea? Experimental design: The feeding trial was conducted from December 2017 to May 2018 on a dairy farm (550 cows) in North Rhine-Westphalia. The calves were divided into two groups (control and treatment groups, each comprising 48 calves); only calves exhibiting neonatal diarrhoea were included in the trial analysis. Test group (n=21): 50 g of Globigen® Dia Stop stirred into the milk feed twice daily Control group (n=17): oral rehydration solution (ORS) mixed into the water twice daily If diarrhoea could not be stopped within four days in calves from either group, the animals were treated by a vet. Experiment 1: Research question: Is Globigen® Dia Stop suitable for prophylaxis of diarrhoea? Experimental design: The feeding trial was conducted from June to September 2016 on a dairy farm (330 cows) in North Rhine-Westphalia. A total of 45 female Holstein calves were studied from the first day of life until weaning (approx. day 77 of life). Test group (n=22): 25 g of Globigen® Dia Stop stirred into milk replacer twice daily from days 4 to 8 of life Control group (n=23): No additional prophylaxis for diarrhoea The prophylactic use of the diet supplementary feed significantly reduced the incidence of diarrhoea in the experimental group. This resulted in significantly higher daily weight gains in the test group (694 g compared with 564 g in the control group) and a significantly (p 0.01) higher weaning weight (89.9 kg compared with 77.5 kg in the control group).
