5 Dairy cow – milk fever milk fever Development and causes Factors relevant to the development of milk fever include: • the 6–8 weeks prior to calving (dry period) • the 2 days following calving • the daily milk yield • the required amount of calcium • the quantity of calcium actually available Background information Milk fever is a disorder of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, which is observed primarily in dairy cows that have recently calved. It is caused by a drop in blood calcium levels, leading to a calcium deficiency (known as hypocalcaemia). In an increasing number of cows that have recently calved, a phosphorus deficiency is also being diagnosed alongside a calcium deficiency . Daily milk yield: The cow is dried off 6–8 weeks before the expected calving date. She is no longer milked and does not produce any milk during this period. After calving, lactation begins and milk yield rises rapidly. Calcium requirement: The amount of calcium required depends heavily on the daily milk yield, as milk contains a lot of calcium. During the dry period, the calcium requirement is very low, as the cow only needs to meet the needs of herself and her growing calf. As soon as lactation begins, the cow’s calcium requirement rises sharply. Quantity of available calcium: With calving and the onset of lactation, calcium requirements rise sharply. It takes the cow’s metabolism up to two days to adapt to this situation. 6 Difference between clinical and subclinical milk fever Muscles and nerves require calcium to function properly. Depending on the severity of the calcium deficiency, cows may suffer from clinical or subclinical milk fever. Dairy cow – milk fever Prevalence Scientific studies suggest that, on average, one in ten older cows (from their third calf onwards) suffers from clinical milk fever and one in three from subclinical milk fever. Subclinical milk fever In the subclinical form of milk fever, the calcium deficiency does not cause any visible symptoms and is therefore often not recognised. Nevertheless, feed intake decreases, milk yield falls and the danger of secondary conditions increases. Clinical milk fever In clinical milk fever, the calcium deficiency is so large that the muscles fail and the cow is unable to stand up. This form of milk fever is usually diagnosed and treated by a vet, who typically administers a calcium infusion directly into the bloodstream. Study (University of Berlin, 2016): 54 per cent of the farms surveyed have no strategy for managing milk fever, i.e. they do not take any preventative measures. Among the farms that implemented milk fever prevention measures, 80 per cent administered calcium orally and 20 per cent fed acid salts. 7 Complications The impairment of the muscles and nerves caused by milk fever can affect a wide variety of areas in the cow’s body: If the skeletal muscles do not function properly, the cow may become unsteady on her feet or be unable to stand. Her unsteady gait means she is less likely to go to the feeding table, thereby reducing her feed intake. This leads to an energy deficit, fat breakdown and, ultimately, ketosis. The danger of injury also increases if the skeletal muscles do not function properly. The muscle at the end of the teat can also be affected by milk fever. If this muscle does not close properly, bacteria can enter the udder and cause mastitis. The entire digestive system relies on an adequate supply of calcium, as it consists of layers of muscle. If these do not function optimally, digestive problems may arise. This is also the cause of abomasal displacement. The uterine muscles are crucial for the course of labour and the expulsion of the afterbirth. If they do not function properly, this can lead to weak contractions and retained placenta. Possible consequences include uterine infections, birth injuries and fertility problems. These secondary conditions place a strain on and weaken the immune system. Pathogens therefore simply cause damage. This link is also suspected in the case of the hoof disease dermatitis digitalis (Mortellaro). 8 Preventive measures Calcium bolus Administration of a calcium bolus to bridge a calcium deficiency • At least 40 g of available calcium should be administered per dose. If the calcium content per bolus exceeds 40 g, one bolus per dose is sufficient. On average, two calcium doses are sufficient. • Use only products that are gentle on the mucous membranes. Calcium chloride is corrosive! • If calcium carbonate is used as the calcium source, it must be noted that the bioavailability of calcium is only approx. 75 per cent. Liquid calcium Administration of a liquid calcium supplement to bridge the calcium deficiency • At least 40 g of available calcium should be administered per dose. If the calcium content per bottle exceeds 40 g, one bottle per dose is sufficient. On average, two calcium doses are sufficient. • Use only products that are gentle on the mucous membranes. Calcium chloride is corrosive! • If calcium carbonate is used as the calcium source, it must be borne in mind that the calcium availability is only approx. 75 per cent. • The more the cows like the taste of the product, the easier and safer it is to administer. Ca Ca Ca Ca-Binder Calcium binders during the last 2 weeks before calving • Feeding calcium binders reduces calcium uptake in the cow’s body. A restricted calcium supply during the dry period can help prevent milk fever. • However,if the ration for dry cowsconsists of a high proportion of potassium-rich grass silage or potassium-rich hay, this measure is not sufficient. • The calcium binder binds calcium in the animals’ digestive tract. The bound calcium is excreted and only the unbound portion enters the bloodstream. This produces the same effect as a low-calcium feeding. • Prerequisites for correct use are a ration calculation, close monitoring of feed intake and immediate discontinuation of calcium binders after calving! Vitamin D3 s.c. or i.m. (subcutaneously or intramuscularly) Vitamin D3 injection • As this is a veterinary medicinal product, its use must be discussed with the vet. Calcium s.c. (subcutaneous = below the skin) Subcutaneous injection of calcium • As this is a veterinary medicine, its use must be discussed with your vet. Acid salts Acid salts during the last 2–3 weeks before calving • Feeding acid salts reduces the DCAB (cation-anion balance) in the feed ration. The aim is to achieve a low blood pH level prior to calving. This negative metabolic state reduces the danger of milk fever. This can be achieved through feed rations with a negative DCAB. • Prerequisites for correct use include precise ration calculation, regular urine analysis, close monitoring of feed intake and immediate withdrawal of the acid salts after calving. Low-potassium and low-calcium feed ration for dry cows • A feeding low in calcium and potassium during the last 3–4 weeks before the expected calving date reduces the danger of milk fever. • However, if the ration for dry cows consists of a high proportion of grass silage or hay, this is usually not feasible. • For this measure to be successful, analysis results for the forage used and precise ration calculations are essential. Conclusion of the study: • After 24 hours, the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood serum of the test group (treated with Calz-o-Phos) were significantly higher than in the control group (no Calz-o-Phos). • The risk of clinically manifest milk fever was reduced by at least 60 per cent. • The increased availability of calcium and phosphorus had a positive effect on milk yield. Energy requirements: The energy requirements depend heavily on the daily milk yield, as energy is needed for milk production. During the dry period, energy requirements are very low, as the cow only needs to meet the needs of her own body and that of the growing calf. As soon as lactation begins, the cow’s energy requirements rise sharply. The higher the milk production, the higher the energy requirements. Quantity of available energy: With calving and the onset of lactation, energy requirements rise sharply. The animals’ feed intake usually does not increase quickly enough, leading to an energy deficit that can persist until the 10th week of lactation. There can be many reasons for insufficient feed intake. Every high-yielding cow has an energy deficit; the decisive factor is the size of this deficit. Background information Ketosis (acetonemia) is a disorder of carbohydrate metabolism. It usually occurs in the first few weeks after calving and is caused by an energy deficit. The high energy requirements resulting from the onset of lactation after calving cannot be met by the gradual increase in feed intake. As a result of this energy deficiency, the animals break down body fat and the level of ketone bodies in the blood rises characteristically. 19 Fertility Dairy cow – Fertility Fertility and beta-carotene Animal fertility is a key factor in livestock farming. Beta-carotene plays a crucial role in this regard. Among other things, it influences ovulation and oestrus, and helps protect against infection. If an animal suffers from a beta-carotene deficiency, the following symptoms or conditions may occur: • False oestrus • Delayed follicular maturation/ovulation • Cysts • Embryonic death • Early miscarriages • Susceptibility to infection Risk factors for ß-carotene deficiency • High proportion of silage maize • Old grass silage (brown in colour) • High proportion of straw in the ration for dry cows • Low feed intake • High milk yield Fresh grass is rich in beta-carotene.
